I am not sure i have made the right chooise. I recently added a ODP Clone. I opend my clone in the belife that ODP is a open and free directory. However it has now come to my attention that a lot of the editors on ODP/DMOZ are only listing in case they get payed. This is against the TOS for ODP/DMOZ, and it is hard to track the bad editors down.

The advantage with a DMOZ listing is that a lot is duplicating the content of DMOZ, for exampel, google is running a duplica of this content. as described above, even i am running a duplicate of the content of DMOZ. This gives a submited site to DMOZ a lot of packlinks, from a lot of pages, that give the page in question a high page rank.

if everyone would have a equal chance of getting listed, i would agree to this (fair to everyone) but it is not ODP (open) to everyone any more, it is just open to the one how can find the right editor..

For this reason i have removed all links from my ODP page, and only provide a duplicate content page, and not giving any page rank back.

I have recently opened my own new directory, it can be found at http://web.archive.org/web/20070323183848/http://www.tne-directory.com/. After working 24 hours a day now reviewing sites, I thought it would be a good idea to write some guidelines for what content I will and will not approve on my new directory.

For bloggers

I wish that the blog has a few month proven activity, and that it does not look like it was made to make money, but that the blog owner does actually have a interest in the topic of question. Don’t submit a new blog, wait half a year, and then submit the blog. Don’t have affiliate links on your blog main text, you can have it on the site where it does not disturb the content.
 

Directory owners
When reviewing directory’s i am looking how easy it is to find information in your directory. For example, for me, a directory should be a source where you can find information about a topic. If your directory is empty, wait until you have a few links under most categories. Then your directory has some useful value. I do not like the word cloud type of directory.
 

Affiliate programs

I will not approve sites that the only purpose is to gain money from affiliate activity. If the site naturally can include some affiliate programs I don’t mind, such as  if you have a site about dogs, i would not mind if you have a page with your favorite books about dog’s. However, if you copy every dog book on Amazon to your site, i would not approve this site. The purpose of the site needs to be something else then gain money on affiliate.
 

Google, YPN ad’s

I will approve pages that are using ad’s. However, it should not be the only thing you see when you get on your page, the content of the page should be the visible thing, not the ad’s. Don’t put the maximum amount of ad’s on the top of the page and you will be fine.
 

Adult content
I will not link to any adult content sites.
 

Pills/Viagra/Brest enhancements etc
As you know if you are running a site like this, there are a lot of bad products out there. I am not a doctor of medicine myself, and can therefore not say what works and what does not work. If i find a single page trying to sell something i will not approve. If however it is a bigger site promoting themselves as a company as well as a product i may approve it if i find that the company in question are a serious company.
Banking/Loan sites

If you are serious about giving loan, have a serious site. Do not mix colors and text size to much. Look at a big bank like UBS how they design there site.  You also need to have contact information and not only a form that say fill in this form and we will contact you.
 

Other general guidelines

Make sure your site has contact information in case you are selling a product or a service so that your clients can find a way of contacting you without using a form for you to call them back. I don’t think it is a serious way of doing business. If your site is not selling, this is not an issue.
The design should be easy to navigate as well as no pop up windows on your site. If most of the images on your site should work. The site needs to be up when i review the site. Links on the page should work and not link to empty/low level content.
 

Deep links and sub domains

I will not approve deep linking pages. I will add sub domains as long as they are not directly related to the main site, for example blogger.com sub domains is a good example of a site i can approve if appropriate content.
Only one link per domain is allowed with exception for domains how for natural reasons only can have sub domains such as blogger.com. Only include one link for your company’s main website, don’t  submit one for every language. (I have examples of domain.com/en and domain.xx being submitted, and the content is the same) If your competitor only have one domain, this would not be fair on them that you would have 2 listings and them only one. 
 

Please also consider the following

We are at the moment receiving around 100 new link requests per day, and i have only time to review 50, so the time it take for me to review your listing may be a while. My directory is however free of charge, and i wish to only include quality sites, I therefore hope for your understanding of the long listing time. All links is yearly reviewed for maintaining a quality index, you will receive a mail asking if you wish to keep your listing before your listing expire. A lot of sites are on the limit if they should be included or not. You may think why this site and not mine get included, try to read the review on my forum or post me a letter, the result may be a inclusion of both sites after discussion with you or exclude both sites. It is hard work, and I am doing my best to be fair on everyone and only include quality content, but sometime it is hard to determine what quality content is when I have no knowledge of the sector. I am however willing to discuss why certain sites did not get listed if you contact me.

I have my domain name thomasnederman.com registered with no-ip. When i was going to renew this name i find that the check out did not work. I tried with 2 different credit cards on 2 different computers, no change. When i on the last day before expiration tried to renew the name on a third computer, it magically worked. Very strange. If you ever have the same problem, ask your friends if you can use there computers to renew your name.
All computers i used had internet explorer, one with the version 7 and 2 with version 6. All computers where using google toolbar.

About a year ago, i was contacted by this company, Novantae Capital. They tried to sell me share’s in a African company that where going to provide alternative fuels (i cant rely remember). I recently when cleaning my mailbox fund this mail from this company. I thought to check back links and found a German site that had back links to this site, saying that there business is not serious. When they kept calling me, i found a Swedish website providing the same information, so for all how they have contacted, and can not find anything in a language you understand, here comes a small explanation of what they are doing, and why you should not do business with this company.

Before i start i wish to say that this is based on the 2 articels i found about this company and my own experience with this company, Novantae Capital may be a serious company.. Please post a comment to this articel if you have a different view. It could happend, but it would be very far fetched. However, what proof do you have actualy suggested this to anyone ? You can yourself find the history of all shares on financial sites, and this information could produced after the actual increase of the share.Before i start i wish to say that this is based on the 2 articels i found about this company and my own experience with this company,When you create a company you need to put in a deposit for the shares, let’s say 10 000 euro. You from this amount of shares create 1?000?000 shares. Each share has a equal part of the value of the company, so in this case, each share is worth 0.01 E. When you sell a share on the stock market, you need to provide a selling price. So in this case, what Novantae is doing, is putting a sell price for each shar on let’s say 10 E a share (that make the share 1000% more expensive then it in real case is) and try to sell this to you. I have read that instead of selling the real shares Novantae is transfering the money to untraceble accounts on Malta, but this is only what i read on one articel. So you invest 50 000 E and get 5000 shares that you think is worth 50 000 and will rise, but the real share is only worth 50 Euros.

The above is only an exampel, let’s only think like this. If it would be a good offer for you to buy, the share would sell themselfs, and they would not have to call you 3 times to make a deal. Another thing they said is on the third call, you get to speak to the “englishman” that also came true in my case.

Other things that specify these type of company’s are they always have flash websites and flash PDF documents they will send you..

I recomend, stay a way from this !!!!!!

What i found very intressting with this is that they dont know the “nofollow” HTML tag. When they write all this warnings, with a link to there website, they are promoting this site in the searchengines and can make more fraud

My blog is starting to rate quite well on my lastname that is Nederman, however, when i search for the firstname, Thomas, i find that it will be quite hard to get ranked number one in google for this name. Why you may ask ? Because of Thomas Jefferson. What i did, i started searching for names that i thought would be hard to get ranked for, and comparing the pagerank of the top result for different names. For example, when i searched Bill (as in Bill Gates or Bill Clinton) the pagerank of his homepage is 7, if i compare that to Thomas, where the Thomas Jefferson homepage is PR 9. Ingvar Kamprad (CEO of IKEA) on wikipedia has pagerank 6. Pamela (As in Pamela Anderson) homepage is PR6. John gives a result of John the Ripper password cracker that is PR 7. Eric i get a Education Resources Information Center that again is PR7.. George, like George W Bush, the top result is “Latest clothes and fashion for all the family from George at ASDA UK” (not George Bush) that has PR4. Brad, like Brad Put, Brad inteligence comes up with PR 5. Muhammad (that i think is one of the more popular Arabic names) i get PR 7 again. Angelina like Angelina Jolie have PR6 on IMDB. I now go to the top name of birth page and find that Jacob was most popular name in 2005, what do i find ?? Boutique Jacob on PR 6. Michael is number 2, i find Michaels, The Arts & Crafts Store. I go to another page from the statictics office and find that Olivia should be the most popular girl name, i find Olivia Cruises on PR6. Jessica was the old number one, and it comes to PR6 for Jessica Simpson homepage. I am checking Jack (hoping of course for the 24 homepage to come up, but instead i find the Jack Daniels homepage as number one on a PR7. Joshua i find popular on the statistics homepage as well and find wikipedia page on PR6. James, hoping for James Bond, but wrong again when James project, that is some plug in for apache comes on first place on PR8, the closest i have come. We take some WWII names like Adolf, and find ofcourse Adolf Hitler on Wikipedia on PR7, Franklin as Franklin D. Roosevelt or Benjamin Franklin. i find Franklin Electronics on PR7. Winston as in Winston Churchill i find Winston & Strawn LLP on PR6. The only thing i found is that someone has named there baby google, and this ofcourse bring the google itself on the top with PR10.. But other then this, i find no name that is stronger in the searchengine then mine !

Anyone can find a better name then Thomas ? Let me know !

My directory has been open for a few weeks now, and the number of links per day is down from 100 per day to around 30 per day. It takes me about one hour of work per day to maintain my directory. When I opened the directory i was nicer to the site owners and accepted more crap then i do today, i was afraid in the beginning that i would not get any links in my directory. However, the number of site is increasing steady. I am starting to be a bit feed up with all the “get bank loan” sites that is constantly submitting to the directory. I think it is the same company (or individual) that has created around 200 sites. The design is very similar, and I even noticed that there office address where the same. The first days it was a lot of spam being submitted, but recently there are more quality sites coming. I believe that the most common reason for rejection in my directory is not providing a contact details. I believe that this is a important point since if you buy a product of a site and you need to return it or you have complaints about the product, you need the phone number. I think the sites that do not want to show this information has something to hide and this is why i don’t list them. However, if the site is for information propose I will list them even without contact details.
I also think that everyone how is submitting links with reciprocal is sites of very bad content, such as affiliate sites.

I have also promoted my site in other directory’s so i can get a more respectable page rank in the next update. My goal is to reach PR 5 or 6 very soon.
I have also noticed that the background color does not show in all browsers on my directory, that i have corrected (now it is all white). It should be grey on the right, but until i have much more time, i will have to leave it this way.
My latest project is to create a directory of directory’s site. The goal with this site is to find the strongest directory on the web. I am using different methods of calculating this, including number of backlinks, number of indexed pages. I hope this could be a usefull resource for directory owners and site promotors. It is however still under construction, but comments on my development are much welcome.

I am currently promoting this site as well as my directory in other directory’s. On the directory’s i have submited my directory i have seen, that i do not agree with, that directorys reject my link because i am not linking back to them.  I think in one way that it is fair, because it is a one to one trade, if i get a link they get a link to. However, in my mind what they should do is send me a mail with the details of the directory details, such as headline, desc, link owner, keywords and other important details. What i usualy do is when a directory submit to my directory, i submit to there directory when i review the site. This is in my mind a much better way.

My directory is using phpLD 3.1. My directory is currently having a limit, so you need to put a desc text of at least 200 characters. I have found today that some can go around this by using a lot of spaces between the words. The only way of finding this entry’s are by going to the details of each submission. You don’t see this in the approve links page.

We are going to the US in a few days, and used the service of Agoda to reserve a hotel in Grand Canyon. We reserved and received a e-mail confirmation letter saying that we should receive a voucher within 48 hours. However, after 48 hours we had still no voucher, so we called them, they promised to look in to this and to call them back the next day. We checked with the hotel in question as well, they said they where in fact full and that they had no trace of any reservation from this hotel. When we called them the next day they said again that they would look in to our request and we should call them back the next day.. Is this a very good quality ? We know for a fact that the hotel in question is full and that they have not got our reservation, it would only take this reservation company 2 minutes to call them and confirm that they in fact have not reserved any room for us and they are in fact full..
So what we did is asked them to cancel our reservation. They don’t cancel our reservation without charging us 1 night fee.. Even though the hotel is full, they have failed to confirm this within 48 hours.. Not a very serious company.. I would not recommend anyone to reserve any stay with this company.
Anyway Agoda agreed to cancel our reservation free of charge on the second call. I just got a e-mail saying they would charge us both nights to my credit card… Agoda can not even keep there promises… I would never trust Agoda again.

At my work when we access our datacenter where all computers are we have to pass throw a automatic access control and authenticate with fingerprints. Once the machine did not let a person authenticate and said “Please only enter one person at the time”.. That is when you know you have eaten to much at lunchtime
